To encourage residents to conserve energy, the Ontario Power Authority (OPA) offers furnace replacement grants to consumers who replace their old furnaces with energy-efficient equipment. With this program, installing a new furnace will not only save you money on your electric bill and increase the value and comfort of your home, it will also earn you $250.
The program does have certain requirements, however, so make sure to familiarize yourself with the details before buying your new furnace.
With the current furnace replacement incentive, you can receive a grant for replacing your existing furnace with a more efficient unit that is equipped with an electronically commutated motor (ECM). This type of motor consumes up to 60 percent less energy than a traditional motor.
To receive the grant, you must purchase an eligible ECM-equipped furnace from a contractor approved by the OPA (like Appleby Systems). This contractor must also install the furnace.
If you’re not in the Oakville area, you can find a list of OPA-approved contractors in your area by using this locator or calling 1-877-797-9473. Lists of eligible furnaces are available from approved contractors.
To be eligible for a furnace replacement incentive grant, you must meet the following criteria:
In addition, the location where you are going to replace the furnace must meet these requirements:
After the OPA-approved contractor installs your new furnace, he or she will fill out an online form on the OPA's site. You need to approve this form. Once you have done this, send a copy of the approved form with proof of purchase for your furnace to the OPA via email, fax or regular mail. You should receive your payment in four to eight weeks.
