This year, new regulations are set to reshape the HVAC industry in Canada. These changes bring more stringent testing standards and efficiency ratings, aiming to provide more accurate representations of field performance. One of the key terms you'll encounter in these new regulations is SEER2. Let's dive into what SEER2 means and how it impacts heat pump and air conditioner ratings.
SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio and is a measure of how efficient cooling systems are during hot weather. SEER2 is an upgraded version of this official ratio.
SEER2 ratings will appear lower than SEER ratings, but this won’t mean they are describing a less efficient model. Instead, the way experts are measuring the efficiency of appliances has changed.
According to new guidelines, the minimum efficiency requirement for heat pumps is increasing from 14.0 to 15.0 SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio). This number, however, will be 14.3 in the new SEER2 rating system.
Additionally, split-system heat pumps must have a minimum HSPF (Heating Seasonal Performance Factor) of 8.8. These changes ensure that heat pumps deliver higher performance and greater energy savings for Canadian homeowners.
Under the new regulations, the minimum efficiency requirement for central air conditioners will rise from 13.0 to 14.0 SEER (or 13.4 SEER2).
That said, 13.0 SEER AC units manufactured before January 1, 2023, can still be installed in northern regions.
New appliances will be labeled with the new SEER2 efficiency standards; however, these are measured differently than the previous SEER system. To clear up any confusion, we’ve put together this table to show you the equivalence between the old SEER rating system and SEER2.
Category | Minimum Efficiency (Pre-2023) | Minimum Efficiency -SEER (2023) | Minimum Efficiency - SEER2 (2023) |
Air Conditioners | 13.0 SEER | 14.0 SEER | 13.4 SEER2 |
Heat Pumps | 14.0 SEER | 15.0 SEER | 14.3 SEER2 |
