Why Do Air Conditioners Freeze? What to Do if Your AC Freezes Up

If it’s the middle of summer and you notice your air conditioner looks like it’s sitting in the middle of an ice storm, turn it off right away! Here, we discuss why air conditioners freeze and what to do about it!

After Turning it Off, Call it In!

The next step is to call Appleby Systems and book an in-home visit so we can diagnose the problem before it gets worse. It might be an easy fix, but if you leave it to sort itself out, a more serious problem could take over.

Why Air Conditioners Freeze

Air conditioner freeze can happen due to:

  • Insufficient airflow – anything that restricts airflow will cause the temperature of your evaporator coil to drop below freezing. Humidity in the outside air collects on the coil, causing ice to build up and sap the system’s cooling ability. Air flow can be interrupted by dirty air filters, a handful of duct problems, damaged blower motors and more.
  • Low refrigerant levels or refrigerant leak – refrigerant issues can cause pressure to drop in the evaporator coil, allowing moisture in the air to freeze and accumulate just like insufficient airflow.
  • Outdoor temperature – most outdoor ac units don’t function effectively in temperatures below 15 degrees Celsius. A chilly summer night could cause the unit to freeze up quickly.

These problems require a qualified technician to diagnose and repair them. Without a quick repair, you may be stuck deciding between a very hot summer or a new air conditioner. Before that happens, contact Appleby Systems for expert local service. We can evaluate and diagnose problems with any make and model of air conditioner.

Air Filter Replacement and Air Conditioner Maintenance

Air conditioners need proper airflow to run smoothly. Dirty air filters and closed registers mean they have to work harder. Filter replacement and other regular maintenance tasks can literally add years of life to your air conditioner. During a scheduled maintenance visit, our technicians check refrigerant levels, clean and lubricate mechanical parts and inspect the entire system.
